About the artworks

Inspiration of Ee Shuan’s artwork

Are you a superhero? All it takes is a giving heart and a helping hand. It’s the little things that we do that make a difference. Be someone’s superhero today.

Chermaine Ang

We are born to be free. So don’t let anything get in the way of doing what you want to do.

Timothy Go

Life merges and spreads in ways we can’t understand. It’s best to see everything as a huge colourful picture with no fixed pattern, and knowing that we contribute to that pattern.

Karen Tan

Inspiration of Yeow Yeong’s artwork

Life is a series of doors filled with keyholes. Unlocking your potential isn’t an easy task. We’ve been raised to believe that there are many things that we can’t or aren’t allowed to do. And changing that perception in ourselves is a frustrating journey filled with failure. But the key to unlocking your potential, is to fail 7 times, and try 8 times.

NEWS RELEASE: AUTUMN / WINTER 2008 COLLECTION

jing | New This Week | Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

The autumn 2008 “Winter Blues” collection compounds influences from late 70’s, late 80’s as well as grungy early 90’s, with a strong presence of subtly washed denims featuring new and interesting finishes. It’s all about the contrasts, with character deriving from the details and the subtleties of fabulous fabrics. Denim fabrics are lighter, darker and coated. The same theme applies to the waist and up with t-shirts having a crafted almost creepy gothic glamorous appearance.

Fits range from classic high-waist slim fits, which remain stylish and key in any well-equipped wardrobe, to high-waist flare fits with a clear nod to the mid-late 70’s. Inspiration comes from early developments in heavy metal in the 70’s. Regular fits for men are increasingly important as complements to slim fits, which shows through in the wider selection of fabrics and washes developed around these fits, mixing classic vintage with influences from the 90’s grunge scene.

Tops include a new range of t-shirts and other jersey items built on fusion between Scandinavian quirk and the early grunge, complemented by oversized knitwear items in dark shades and stunning shirts in a clean execution. Fit-wise, the tops tend towards oversized although fitted silhouettes continue having a strong presence in the collection.

Colours are range from black and white but with a focus on dark shades and the grey scale. Reds, blues, grey and black form the pillars of the collection.

RVCA…

jing | New This Week, You need to know... | Monday, August 11th, 2008

RVCA • was founded by its current Creative Director, PM Tenore. RVCA aims to transcend the boundaries of traditional action sports apparel and be a design-driven lifestyle brand free from passing trends.
The ‘V’ looking character in RVCA’s name is a ‘U’. The ‘U’ is written in traditional Roman script, and thus appears as a ‘V’. ‘Ruca’ can be translated as “clothing” in Greek, and it is believed the ‘V’ as ‘U’ convention arises from this Greco-Roman connection.
RVCA is the brainchild of company Founder and Creative Director, PM Tenore. Transcending the boundaries of traditional action sports apparel, RVCA is a design-driven lifestyle brand free from passing trends. Appearing as a natural on the shelves of boutiques as on those of a local skate shop, RVCA is brought together by a group of likeminded individuals from various subcultures, a collaboration of sorts, a lifestyle within itself.

PM Tenore’s intention from the very beginning has been to create a platform for RVCA which combines art, music, fashion and a modern lifestyle in an original way. At the forefront of this vision has been RVCA’s Artist Network Program (ANP) – a venture established to showcase the talents of accomplished as well as unknown artists who inspire our generation and push the boundaries of creative excellence.

Established to promote the genuine integrity of RVCA’s subcultures while simultaneously giving back to the community, RVCA in essence is redefining the way the market views art and fashion as represented through the balance of opposites and how they coexist: water, oil; air, land; destruction, industrialization; art, science; foreign, domestic; order, anarchy; past, present.

For RVCA, it is about today, tomorrow and life as the big picture. It is about inspiring our generation, providing something of substance and culture and above all doing it with integrity and as a united family, a close knit community.

All about Denim…

jing | You need to know... | Friday, July 11th, 2008

Was looking though some articles on denim and found some interesting facts. Being a shop that sells denim, i think it is important to share this with everyone.

Denim is a cotton twill fabric, in which the weft passes under two or more warp fibers. This produces the familiar diagonal ribbing identifiable on the reverse of the fabric, which distinguishes denim from cotton duck. It has been in American usage since the late eighteenth century. Denim was traditionally colored blue with indigo dye to make blue “jeans,” though “jean” then denoted a different, lighter cotton textile; the contemporary use of jean comes from the French word for Genoa, Italy (Gênes), where the first denim trousers were made.

Japanese selvage denim is the finest and rarest on the market today.
Historically, American denim was considered superior. In time, however, because shuttle looms only made 30-inch wide cloth, they became obsolete. In the 1950’s, when American jean manufacturers saw demand for their product skyrocket, they searched for faster, less expensive methods for producing denim fabric. They mothballed the traditional shuttle-type looms in favor of modern, projectile looms which could make a 60-inch wide fabric (or wider) for much less money. The fabric produced, however, was lighter and less durable. Manufacturers also replaced real indigo dye with synthetic substitutes and began pre-washing all fabric in order to control shrink and twist. The byproduct of these changes was an article lacking character with no potential for greatness.
Three decades later, select Japanese companies saw a market for traditionally made denim. They bought up most of the old, American shuttle looms and began crafting denim for small, local clothing companies. When the “Premium Denim” craze began, a few forward thinking companies introduced jeans made of selvage denim dyed with real indigo.
Quality denim is indigo dyed using loop dying machines which, like the looms, are rare and ancient machines., They feed a rope of cotton yarn through vats of indigo dye and then up to the roof of the factory to allow the indigo to oxidize before the ‘rope’ goes back down into the next vat. Some brands use up to 30 dips, creating a rich, deep indigo blue color with excellent character.

This is how Naked & Famous Jeans are dyed using natural indigo dyes which are rare. And not only that, the fade is different from using synthetic dyes.

New Window Display!!

We just updated the window display yesterday and it took us more than 6hrs to stick up all the green frames. This idea is a continuity from the previous window in which we used mozakid vinyl stickers.

Also introducing new designs from Beautiful Decay ( www.beautifuldecay.com ). Featuring collaboration with Japanese illustrator Aya Kato whose style is a dark fusion of Manga and Art Nouveau.

Welcome To WOOONDERLAND

jing | Design | Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Introducing Team WOOONDERLAND. Well, Team Actually… was there too!

Just a little intro to our big family. From right to left we have Paul (*ehem ehem*), Jing (WOOONDERLAND), Sue, Mavis, Derek (Actually…), Gavin, Julius, Karl and Lionel.

It’s been ONE year since the surprising discovery and frantic first day of our store opening when our ceiling fell. On that morning, we were all rushing about trying to get everything right and ready. 2nd June 07, that was the day. Oh yeah, and what about that changing room door that couldn’t close. We’ve fixed all of that now and it seems like a distant memory, aint it?

One year ahead, and we’ve even given our 25,000 metre tubes haircuts every now and then. We’ve been through much, having our glass panels been smashed by rogues. Getting ‘prank calls’ and being mistaken for some bus company whose phone number we acquired would explain that constant ringing of the phone in the shop if you’ve been hanging around. But we’ve made it!! We’re welcoming you back to this same space, this same group of people, and bringing you more exciting brands this time round.

Since this is the 1st blog post, was thinking maybe we should let everyone know what we carry.

55DSL from Italy. Born in 1994 as an offshoot of DIESEL, the label was initially inspired by the fast and active lifestyles of the young and snowboarding/ surfing/ skateboard. Targeting the young, fashion conscious and exclusivity-seeking, the brand has enjoyed international success in key cities in UK, Japan, Italy, Germany, USA and France.

Dr Denim’s spring 2008 collection “spring break” is a look to the past, featuring influences from the 70‘s, 80’s and 90‘s (our favourite decades by far), with more volume in new fits and a stronger presence of straight legs and flares, as well as a range of news on our iconic slim fit program. As always, the collection is Scandinavian in our own quirky way.

We are honored to announce the launch of a new line of fashionable accessories from Pan Am Travel Goods. The first collection debuted in the Spring of 2007 and paid homage to the original Pan Am cabin bag.
Produced with an outer shell of PVC, these first class designs served to remind past and present generations of the first airline to offer luxury through both domestic and international travel.

The Naked & Famous Denim concept is unique and simple. The best, most rare, and often most expensive denim fabric in the world is combined with good modern fits. But, we strip down the product to the core essentials. Never washed, never embroidered, no gimmicks! And so, we are able to offer our jeans at a surprisingly low price-point. All our denim is from Japan, all our jeans are made in Canada.
